Wonderful new venue for seeing clients in Swansea
From 1st September I have joined a new therapy centre which has just been set up in Sketty – it is called Sketty Therapies and more information is available as to the other personnel involved in this very smart treatment centre at the website (which is still in development) www.skettytherapies.co.uk for all the latest news on what will be available. The owner is Cheryl Key, already an established and very experienced Physiotherapist and Cranio-sacral therapist, previously working in Killay. Cheryl has re-designed and totally refurbished a 1st floor property right in the centre of Sketty [next to Lloyd’s Bank] at 29A Gower Road.
It has a lovely atmosphere, elegant fittings and furnishings and three lovely treatment rooms to accommodate a number of experienced therapists who will be joining her over the next few weeks.
For my clients, it does mean that I will no longer be in the office accommodation that has served me well over the last 6 months in Alexandra Road. Thanks to Anthony for kindly sharing his room with me on a temporary basis. The benefits of the new venue will, I’m sure be very obvious to all my clients. Being on the first floor, it may cause a few difficulties for my less mobile clients, but this will be overcome by offering home visits at other times during the week. Parking is available just across the road in a Pay and Display car park.
It is also therapeutic for me to work alongside other people, as opposed to working alone, as I do in some of the treatment rooms. So a good mix all round!

Public Events
It was lovely to see you all at the Mother and Toddler Show at the Liberty Stadium in July – those of you who braved the appalling weather had the opportunity of discussing a forthcoming birth or childcare with a large range of professionals and also to be entertained by dance, story-telling and a beautifully decorated bouncy castle. I was offered to have a go in the castle but, I graciously declined!
The winners to the raffle have now been notified and, I’m pleased to say that the first prize winner has received his free therapy session. Those of you with the runner up prizes need to get in touch soon to make sure you get the benefit of your vouchers before the date runs out. Now you will have a lovely new venue to try as well as getting a reduction in your first treatment session with me.
Public Events have been taking up the weekends, including a great weekend at the West Wales Motorcycle show at the Showground in Carmarthen in August. Even though the rain on the Saturday kept many away, the Sunday dawned dry and sunny [and stayed that way for most of the day]. The winners of that raffle will be notified over the weekend. So keep your fingers crossed that you have won a free treatment or at least part of the cost.
There are many more events to come in the run up to Christmas. These include a trip to the heritage Hotel in the Rhondda; The Natural Living Show in Swansea; The Healthy Living Show in Cardiff and the lovely pre-Christmas Festival of the Senses in Llandeilo.
If you are raising money for a local or national charity and want to offer something different – why not think of inviting complementary therapists to your event – either to say thank you to hard working charity volunteers or to help you raise funds for the charity itself. Think laterally – therapists are usually more than happy to join in – I know I am ! So whether it’s for large charities like Help the Heroes or local branches of large charities such as Help the Aged or for very local charities that raise funds for individual treatments or equipment for a disabled child – if it possible to help then do ask!

How do YOU sleep?
Sleep is intended to erase or reduce the strains and pressures it goes through during the day – if your sleep is of poor quality, then your body will end up carrying the strain and pressure into the next day’s activities.
Most of us understand that we need to have a good, supportive mattress and pillow. [Although how many of us really have this?] The bedding you choose must support the weight of your body without sagging, but it must still be soft enough to allow for the contours of your spine, hips, shoulders, neck and head to be supported in the best position.

How many of us think about how we also need to consider appropriate sleeping postures?

Muscle and ligament sprain and strain and spinal misalignment can be caused by high forces on a joint over a short period of time but it can also be caused by low forces over a long period of time – as in night after night of the same poor sleeping postures.

THIS ADVICE IS NOT INTENDED TO REPLACE MEDICAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SLEEPING POSTURES FOR THOSE WITH NEED TO SLEEP WITH SPECIAL SUPPORT e.g. lung or heart problems, high blood pressure or other conditions.
Here are a few hints and tips from a very useful little book called ‘Sitting on the Job’ written by Scott W. Donkin [more details available at the online shop].
    Sleep on your Stomach?
Your back is being strained by the exaggerated curve of your lower back . In order to breathe, you also have to twist your neck to one side.
Sleep with your arms above your head?
It is not good to sleep for long periods with your arms above your head – it puts strain on your shoulders, upper arms, crowds the spine in the neck area giving problems with the muscles, ligaments, blood vessels and nerves between your neck and shoulders and can cause numbness and tingling in your arms and hands. Sleeping with your arm under your head or neck causes similar problems.
     Sleep on your Back?
This is said to be one of the best positions for good quality sleep. The main causes of strain and stress here come with the choice of an appropriate pillow.
If your pillow is too high, your chin will be forced downwards onto your chest. This position is also a problem for snorers.
Sleep on your Side?
The other good position for quality sleep – but it is still important to think of pillows.
If your pillow is too high or too low - you will be putting more strain on one side of your neck than the other.

Another factor in side lying is the problem caused by twisting the lower body by throwing your top leg over towards the bed.
When you sleep on your side, keep your legs on top of each other, with knees bent.
If this is uncomfortable place a thin pillow between the knees – especially if you have bony knees.

!          Caution –
IF YOU HAVE BEEN ADVISED TO SLEEP SUPPORTED BY LOTS OF PILLOWS OR PARTIALLY ON YOUR STOMACH FOR MEDICAL OR SURGICAL REASONS THEN YOU MUST FOLLOW THESE GUIDELINES.
HOWEVER, DO THINK TO CHECK WITH YOUR MEDICAL ADVISOR IF OR WHEN YOU CAN SAFELY STOP USE THE POSTURE THEY RECOMMEND OR WHETHER THIS NEEDS TO BE A LIFELONG CHANGE.
