Supporting Teachers and Education Staff: Looking After the People Who Help Everyone Else

Teaching is one of the most rewarding professions, but it is also one of the most demanding.

Whether you work in a classroom, a nursery, a college, a university, or in a support role within education, the physical and emotional demands of the job can gradually take their toll. Long days on your feet, hours spent marking, working at a computer, preparing lessons, managing classrooms, attending meetings, meeting deadlines, and balancing the needs of pupils, parents, and colleagues can all contribute to increasing levels of stress and muscular tension.

At Every Body’s Better, I work with teachers and education professionals to help them find time to care for themselves, so they can continue caring for others.

The Physical Demands of Working in Education

Many education professionals experience recurring areas of tension, including:

  • Neck and shoulder tightness from computer work, marking and lesson preparation.
  • Upper back stiffness from leaning over desks, interactive whiteboards, and spending long periods in one position.
  • Lower back discomfort from prolonged standing, sitting for extended periods, or adopting awkward postures while teaching or working at a desk.
  • Hip and leg tension from spending much of the day on their feet.
  • Wrist and forearm tightness from writing, typing and repetitive classroom tasks.
  • Jaw tension and headaches that can develop during stressful periods.

These physical tensions often build gradually, becoming something people simply learn to live with until they begin to affect both their work and their quality of life.

The Hidden Impact of Stress

Teaching is about far more than delivering lessons.

Education professionals are constantly making decisions, responding to unexpected situations, supporting pupils’ learning and wellbeing, meeting curriculum and inspection requirements, completing administration, communicating with parents and carers, and often taking work home.

Over time, ongoing stress can contribute to:

  • Muscle tension
  • Poor posture
  • Reduced flexibility
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty relaxing
  • Poor sleep quality
  • Reduced concentration
  • Feeling physically and mentally drained

When the body remains in a heightened state of tension, it becomes increasingly difficult to switch off, even after the working day has ended.

How the EMMETT Technique May Help

The EMMETT Technique is a gentle bodywork approach that uses light fingertip pressure on specific points of the body.

Sessions are individually tailored and aim to help the body release unnecessary muscular tension, encouraging greater comfort, improved freedom of movement and deep relaxation.

Many people report feeling:

  • More relaxed
  • Lighter and freer in their movement
  • Less physically restricted
  • Better able to unwind after busy periods
  • More aware of how much tension they had been holding

Treatment can often be carried out fully clothed and is tailored to the needs of each individual.

Supporting the Whole Person

Every person is different, which is why every session is tailored to the individual.

Alongside the EMMETT Technique, I may also incorporate other complementary approaches where appropriate, including:

  • Energetic Structural Balance (ESB) to support overall balance and wellbeing.
  • Photobiomodulation (PBM) using low-level light therapy where appropriate to support healthy tissue function.
  • Kinesiology muscle testing to help identify possible nutritional or lifestyle factors that may be affecting wellbeing.
  • Practical advice on posture, breathing, movement and self-care strategies.

This integrated approach allows each treatment to be designed around your individual needs and goals.

Investing in Yourself

Teachers and education professionals spend their days investing in the wellbeing and development of others.

Looking after your own wellbeing isn’t a luxury—it’s an important part of remaining healthy, resilient and able to continue doing the job you love.

Taking time to release physical tension, relax both body and mind, and restore your energy can make a meaningful difference to how you feel both inside and outside the workplace.

Wellbeing Support for Schools and Educational Settings

As well as seeing individual clients in clinic, I also work with schools, colleges, nurseries and other educational settings to support the wellbeing of their staff.

Sessions can be arranged as part of:

  • Staff wellbeing days
  • INSET days
  • Staff wellbeing weeks
  • Twilight wellbeing sessions
  • Health and wellbeing events
  • Individual EMMETT Technique sessions for staff
  • Talks on posture, movement, stress management and self-care
  • Bespoke wellbeing packages tailored to the needs of your organisation

Whether you’re looking to reward your team, support staff wellbeing throughout the academic year, or complement an existing wellbeing programme, sessions can be tailored to suit your setting and timetable.

Supporting the wellbeing of staff is an investment in the whole educational community.

Take Time for You

If you work in education and are feeling physically tense, mentally exhausted, or simply in need of some time to recharge, I’d be delighted to discuss how I may be able to help.

Whether you’re a classroom teacher, teaching assistant, lecturer, nursery practitioner, school administrator, learning support assistant, pastoral staff, or a member of the senior leadership team, your wellbeing matters too.

If you’re a headteacher, school business manager, or part of a leadership team looking to enhance staff wellbeing, I’d also be pleased to discuss how bespoke wellbeing sessions could support your team.

Every Body’s Better offers personalised complementary therapy sessions in South Wales, helping people improve comfort, move more freely, relax more deeply and feel better equipped to meet the demands of everyday life.

Because when those who dedicate their lives to educating others feel supported themselves, everyone benefits.
